Move-in day at Long Island University is just over a month away and we’re excited to welcome students back to campus for the 2025-26 academic year! There are many exciting things in store for students, including events at the Tilles Center.
Two weeks after move-in, starting Friday, September 12th, Long Island University is hosting Homecoming and Family Weekend. Events include a football game, Alumni award ceremony, tailgate, and a live orchestral accompaniment of Jaws!
Jaws is a movie that spans the generational gap; the Bruces — the featured three sharks — are some of the most impressive practical effects in cinema.
However, according to Ian Shaw, son of Jaws star Robert Shaw, and co-author of play The Shark is Broken, “the animatronic sharks were difficult to work with, and at worst, completely unresponsive for the majority of the shoot.”
With the sharks out of commission so often, Spielberg had to get clever. In place came the unforgettable sound of the shark and John Williams’ iconic score. “When you hear, ‘boom-boom, boom-boom,’ you’ve already been conditioned to think the shark is present,” Shaw wrote in a description of his play. “When it’s far away, it’s very faint. When it’s just about to attack it’s very close and it’s very loud. We can advertise the shark’s presence or his attitude by how we manage these notes, just very few notes.”

Jaws in Concert, featuring the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra, offers a unique twist on the original movie, with a live orchestra performing alongside a screening of the film. Jaws has one of the most recognizable scores of any horror film, and the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra is bringing it off the silver screen and into the Tilles Center Concert Hall.
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to current, former, and future Long Island University Sharks, and hope to see you at Jaws in Concert on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 3:00 PM!
